University of Nairobi plans a phased reopening

The University of Nairobi plans a phased reopening following its closure due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This was announced by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama in an address to the University community on July 10, 2020. “As you are now aware, on July 7, 2020, the Ministry of Education issued a directive on the reopening of learning institutions in Kenya,” he said. “In line with the government directives, I have instructed the Deans and Directors working closely with the respective Principals to prepare to open in a phased manner.

In an address to the University of Nairobi community, the Vice-Chancellor,commended various departments of coming up with solutions mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic. He mentioned the Department of Chemistry for producing soap, the School of Pharmacy for the sanitizers and the School of Engineering for developing a technology that will help doctors monitor ventilators remotely.

The vice Chancellor also said, the Dental School and the University Health Services are the beneficiaries of personal protective equipment (PPE) donated by several donors.

UoN among Universities in Times Higher Education World (THE) rankings

Once again, the University of Nairobi has made it to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020 ranking. UoN is ranked 801-1000, with an overall score of 22.2-28.2 and is the only University in Kenya to appear in this year’s list. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020 includes almost 1,400 universities across 92 countries, standing as the largest and most diverse university rankings ever to date.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama appointed chairperson of Commonwealth Universities Regional Committee

The University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama has been appointed to serve as the Chairperson of the newly formed East and Southern Africa (ESA) Regional Committee of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). The term is for two years. The Committee is part the 500 ACU membership whose headquarters is in United Kingdom.
