Confucius Institute Building Handed Over to the University of Nairobi

The new Confucius Institute Building located on Arboretum Drive, has officially been handed over to the University of Nairobi. The ceremony was presided over by the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Prof. George Magoha, who praised the good relationships between Beijing and Nairobi.

Constructed at a cost of 1.4Billion shillings, the new Confucius Building hosts a number of lecture halls, conference facilities, accommodation facilities, staff offices and Chinese Language research offices and language libraries.

History as UoN Conducts Examinations Remotely

The University of Nairobi has today achieved a milestone by successfully conducting its first ever end of semester examinations online. Coronavirus: WHO suspends trials of hydroxychloroquine over safety fears

Testing of the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a possible treatment for coronavirus has been halted because of safety fears, the World Health Organization (WHO) says. According medical journal The Lancet, there were no benefits to treating coronavirus patients with hydroxychloroquine, and that taking it might even increase the number of deaths among those in hospital with the disease. Hydroxychloroquine is safe for malaria, and conditions like lupus or arthritis, but no clinical trials have recommended its use for treating Covid-19.

This accounts for about 75 per cent of our budget, the government provides the remaining 25 per cent. He also said he would not propose to have tertiary institutions open first. Senate approves online examinations

In response to the negative effects of Covid-19 on teaching and learning, the University of Nairobi Senate approved guidelines and procedures for online examinations on 8th May 2020. The Special Senate was chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Prof.S.G.Kiama. The Senate relied on the provisions of Statutes- xxv that gives senate the mandate over all academic matters in the University. The University of Nairobi multidisciplinary team of engineers and doctors have developed a home grown portable ventilator that will reduce the cost of the current ventilators by nearly 90% . Speaking during a demonstration session by the lead engineers and doctors, Prof. Stephen Kiama, the University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor, congratulated the team for the hardwork put in place to ensure that the low cost portable ventilator comes to life. “This demonstrates our value of care.
