Training on Sexual Harassment and Gender-Based Violence Held by UHS

The University Health Services (UHS) at the University of Nairobi held a training on sexual harassment and gender-based violence (GBV) at UON Towers (MLT 405). The training brought together 65 participants, comprising university teaching and administrative staff and students, to strengthen awareness, prevention, and response mechanisms related to sexual harassment and GBV within the university setting.

The training aimed to improve participants’ understanding of sexual harassment and gender-based violence through practical knowledge on how to identify different forms of sexual harassment, understand the university's reporting procedures, apply survivor-centered approaches, and promote prevention strategies such as bystander intervention.

The interactive session also strengthened collaboration among safeguarding focal points and institutional actors responsible for promoting safe and inclusive campus environments. The training highlighted the importance of continuous awareness and sensitization, as many staff and students remain unaware of existing policies and reporting mechanisms.

The participants recognized the need for ongoing awareness and sensitization, as many members of the university community are not aware of the safeguarding policies and reporting channels in place. The discussions emphasized the need to build confidence among staff and students to report incidents and seek appropriate support without fear of stigma or retaliation.

Key recommendations included the need to develop regular awareness and capacity-building programs, to strengthen the implementation of the university's safeguarding policies, and to encourage reporting of cases that are experienced or witnessed.

The university remains committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment through sustained awareness initiatives, policy implementation, and strengthened institutional response systems.
