As part of our ongoing efforts, the University recently had the privilege of hosting the Technical University of Mombasa for a benchmarking session on Gender Mainstreaming at the UoN Towers, on June 5, 2023.
Chaired by Dr. Grace Kiringa, Director of Planning and Performance Management and Head of the Gender Mainstreaming section, the meeting brought together representatives from both institutions. The Technical University of Mombasa team, led by Gertrude Kisang, Chair of Gender Mainstreaming, joined the University of Nairobi Gender Mainstreaming Committee for an insightful and productive exchange.
In her opening remarks on behalf of the UoN Vice Chancellor, Dr. Kiringa emphasized the importance of gender mainstreaming in higher education institutions. She highlighted the multi-disciplinary nature of the UoN Gender Mainstreaming Committee, which was appointed by the Vice Chancellor. The committee focuses on promoting behavior change among staff and students to address gender-based violence, ensuring that all administrative units, departments, faculties, and students are well-informed about their roles and responsibilities. Dr. Kiringa also highlighted the close collaboration between the UoN Gender Mainstreaming Committee and the University Health Services, providing counseling and support for those affected by gender-based violence.
Prof. Alice A. Odingo, Chair of the Corporate Gender Mainstreaming Committee, shed light on the comprehensive framework of the University of Nairobi's Gender Mainstreaming efforts. She underlined the importance of socialization conferences, reporting tools, and accessible channels for seeking assistance in cases of gender-based violence. Prof. Odingo acknowledged the challenges related to LGBTQ+ inclusion and emphasized ongoing measures to ensure that everyone receives the necessary support through the Gender Mainstreaming Desk. She also highlighted the role of passion and teamwork as key drivers in running the committee.
During the session, the Technical University of Mombasa had the opportunity to ask questions and engage in a fruitful discussion on various aspects of the UoN Gender Mainstreaming initiative. Topics ranged from financial management and infrastructure to capacity building, recruitment, and succession planning.
As a result of this benchmarking collaboration, both teams reaffirmed their commitment to sustainability and pledged to establish partnerships with stakeholders such as the National Gender Policy Commission. .
